22 Things To Consider Before Getting A Rabbit

Rabbits are very cute and fluffy, but unfortunately they are not for everyone. Before you decide to get a bunny there are always some factors you should consider before committing to a bunny.

1- Do I have the time?

2- Do I have the money? -Yes, rabbits are way cheaper then a dog or a cat, but the starter for the rabbit can end up costing close to $300 in just new stuff for your bunny. Monthly costs can range from anywhere from $20-$60.

3- Do I often travel?

4- Do I have someone who is knowledgeable enough to care for him/her if I am away?

5- Do I have the space?

6- Am I ready to take on a animal that is a huge commitment? (up to 15 years for some)

7- Am I allowed a bunny? -Wether you live with other people, rent, or live in an apartment.

8- Do I plan on getting another pet after the bunny? -Many times people obtain another animal that doesn't get along with the rabbit and they are then forced to re-home their bunny or don't give him/her the time and attention they need and deserve.

9- Is there anyone in the family that is allergic to rabbits or hay?

10- Will I take the rabbit to the vet for emergencies?

11- Will I spay/neuter my rabbit? Your pet rabbit will lead a healthy, playful and carefree life if you spay or neuter it. It may be much better behaved, and stink less as well.

12- Do I know how to identify common health problems?

13- Do I know how to properly handle a rabbit?

14- Do I genuinely want a rabbit and not just in the spur-of-the-moment?

15- Do I know how to trim the bunnies nails without causing harm to the rabbit?

16- Can I identify the rabbit's behavior signs like thumping?

17- Do I know what is safe for bunnies to eat?

18- Do I know what is not safe for bunnies to eat?

19- Do I have a enclosed safe area for the bunny to run around?

20- Is there any small children in the house that could potentially injure themselves by improper handling of the bunny or the bunny itself?

21- Do I have a safe spot to keep my bunny away from potential dangers? -example: power cords, other animals, small children, etc.

22- Am I aware that rabbits are prey animals, therefore I need to be calm and patient when dealing with them?
