What To Do When You First Bring Your Rabbit Home

Rabbits are absolutely beautiful creatures! They are just so adorable and fluffy! But sometimes we need to take a step back and admire the cuteness instead of smothering it.

When a rabbit is brought into a new environment or place it can be pretty scary. New sounds, new smells. It's all very, well, new! Although the first thing we want to do is hold the rabbit and pet it, the best thing to do is leave him/her alone and let them get used to all the sounds and sights. This can be very hard to do, but it is very important that we do so. The best thing to do is let the rabbit explore his cage as you sit by it and just read a book or talk on the phone... anything that doesn't involve touching or handling the rabbit. The rabbit should be left in the cage for the first 2 days before taken out and played with. They need time to adapt to their new home without undergoing the stress of being picked up and handled.

Make sure there is plenty of hay in your bunnies cage upon arrival. Munching on hay can help your bunny reduce stress and "keep its mind off things". Your bunny should also have some pellets in the cage as well. Not too much, but enough to help your rabbit and encourage them to eat. Aside from food, make sure your rabbit is in a area where s/he can observe its surrounding areas to get a good look at its environment.
